During their journey, Mario and Luigi meet their younger selves: Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. The adult brothers can carry the babies on their backs, while their younger counterparts can enter small passages and reach areas that the adults cannot access.
Gameplay combines exploration, puzzles and turn-based RPG battles. During combat, you select attacks but must also press buttons at the correct moment to deal additional damage or avoid enemy attacks. This means reaction speed and timing are just as important as traditional role-playing mechanics.
One of the game's distinctive features is the cooperation between all four characters. Using various Bros. Items, Mario, Luigi and their younger selves can perform powerful combined attacks. By pressing the correct buttons with precise timing, you can execute effective combinations against increasingly challenging opponents.
The Nintendo DS version uses both screens to display the game world and different actions. Throughout the adventure, you visit a variety of locations across the Mushroom Kingdom, encounter familiar and new characters, and gradually uncover the Shroobs' plans.
